Vol. 393 No. 3

Written Answers. - Mildly Mentally Handicapped Children.

45.

asked the Minister for Education her policies regarding the education of mildly mentally handicapped children at post-primary level.

129.

asked the Minister for Education the proposals she has to make provision for students with special education needs in mainstream post-primary schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 45 and 129 together.

The key principle which informs my Department's policy in relation to the education of mildly handicapped pupils at post primary level is that, where appropriate, such education should be provided in special classes in ordinary schools, rather than in special schools.

In order to assist post primary schools cater for the needs of pupils assessed as being mildly handicapped, my Department will authorise a teaching post in the appropriate post primary school in addition to the normal quota. There are currently six such posts in the secondary sector, 18 in the community and comprehensive sector and 28 in the vocational sector.
