Vol. 393 No. 3

Written Answers. - University College Dublin.

123.

asked the Minister for Education, in light of UCD's funding being reduced by 25 per cent and a loss of 200 staff in the past two years, if she has authorised UCD to employ additional staff and improve library facilities, resulting from the extra income acquired by the college following the acceptance of an extra two hundred students in the faculty of arts; and if not, if she will make a statement outlining her intentions regarding the utilisation of the said fund.

A committee was recently established comprising the heads of the universities and chaired by the secretary of my Department to investigate the question of the provision of additional student places, and subsequent benefits of the additional income.

The staffing arrangements and support services required to cater for the increased student intake in the Faculty of Arts in UCD are matters to be determined by the college authorities within agreed gross pay expenditure limits and having regard to the total income available to the college in any financial year.
