asked the Minister for Education the number of students in 1989-90 who are in (a) first level, (b) second level, and (c) third level education in this country.

asked the Minister for Education the projections for the number of students in (a) first level, (b) second level, and (c) third level education for each year from 1990-91 to 1999-2000.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 186 and 187 together.

* Data in respect of 1988-89 represent provisional enrolment figures based on the statistical returns completed by the various schools and colleges throughout the country in respect of that particular academic year. As the statistical return for the current academic year is only in the process of collection and preliminary analysis by my Department at the moment, it is not possible at this stage to give actual enrolment figures for 1989-90. It should be noted that data in respect of the 1989-90—1999-00 academic years (inclusive) represent projected enrolments prepared by my Department. The projections take published official demographic projections into account as well as trends within the education system itself. They are kept under regular review and are subject to change as relevant new data require.

The projections for third level are at present being reviewed by an inter-departmental committee on third level education.
