Vol. 393 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Transport Safety.

25.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport when he last conducted a review of safety aspects of public passenger transport in aviation and railways; if he will outline the findings ascertained from any such review; the monitoring which takes place by officers of his Department or otherwise on these issues; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

All safety aspects of public passenger transport by air and rail are the subject of continuous monitoring and review by officials of my Department specifically appointed for that purpose and both forms of transport are required to operate to the highest standards of international practice.

Since my appointment as Minister for Tourism and Transport. I have been concerned to ensure that the highest possible level of safety is applied, inter alia, to air and rail passenger transport and that no effort should be spared in ensuring the safety of those who use Irish transport services and of those employed in the provision of such services. I have had consultations in this matter with the chairman of the State bodies concerned and, in the light of those consultations, I am considering whether any further measures should be taken to ensure that the highest safety standards are maintained.
