Vol. 393 No. 5

Written Answers. - Post-Primary School Inspections.

124.

asked the Minister for Education the number of post-primary schools inspected by her Department's inspectors in the past year; and the number of such schools in respect of which an inspector's report has been presented in line with the Rules and Programme for Secondary Schools.

Various types of inspection visits are carried out in post-primary schools and most are formally reported on by the inspectors. These are as follows: (1) subject inspections; (2) school organisation inspections; (3) inspections to monitor the efficiency of instruction; (4) to monitor pilot projects and curriculum development projects; (5) to monitor oral, aural and practical examinations; (6) to monitor in-service courses for teachers; (7) investigative visits following complaints; and (8) humanitarian missions to resolve the school placement problems of certain students.

Owing to the diversity of purpose and type that characterises inspection visits it would be very difficult to put an exact figure on the total number of such visits carried out in the 1988-89 school year. However, the more significant visits involving reports amounted to 2,414.
