Vol. 393 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cullenswood House Association.

11.

asked the Taoiseach if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Cumann Theach Feadha Cuileann-Cullenswood House Association have made an application for financial assistance in connection with the project to restore this historic house which has many strong links with the history of the Irish language revival; and, having regard to the deteriorating state of the building, when a response to the application for financial assistance will be made known; when the moneys can be conveyed to the association; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While the case is being considered at present in conjunction with the numerous other applications for assistance from lottery funds to be disbursed by Roinn na Gaeltachta, it is unlikely, in view of the demands on the limited funds available, that assistance can be provided from that source.

Do I take it that the Taoiseach's reply effectively is negative and that the application which has been lodged by the Cullenswood House Association for financial assistance will not be acceded to? Will that be the impact of the information the Taoiseach has given the House?

I cannot think of any source under my general jurisdiction from which assistance could be given at present.

On a point of clarification, will there be any money available from lottery funds through the National Heritage Council?

No, the National Heritage Council have already decided that it is not a case for them.

And it is not now the case for Roinn na Gaeltachta either.

Is the birth place of Scoil Éanna of no relevance to Roinn na Gaeltachta?

That is not the case. It is a question of trying to allocate scarce funds between alternative uses, as Adam Smith confronted so long ago——

The Taoiseach is becoming an expert on Adam Smith.

Thatcherite policies.
