Vol. 393 No. 9

Written Answers. - Fish Mercury Content.

22.

asked the Minister for the Marine if he will make a statement on the checks which are carried out for mercury content in fish landed at Irish ports; the findings of such examinations; their relationship to EC safety standards; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The mercury content of fish landed into Irish ports is assessed on a regular basis by my Department as part of their ongoing quality assurance programme. Results of analysis show that the mercury content in these fish landings is negligible and complies with the health and safety guidelines suggested by the World Health Organisation and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN.

There are no EC safety standards in this area.
