Vol. 393 No. 9

Written Answers. - Director of Prison Medical Services Appointment.

71.

asked the Minister for Justice whether it is proposed to appoint a director of prison medical services; and, if so, when.

The post of medical director for the prison service has been advertised by the Civil Service Commission on two occasions in the past. However, the commission was unable to recommend a candidate for appointment on either occasion.

At present consultations are taking place with the appropriate medical/ health interests with a view to finalising proposals which, it is anticipated, will enable the post to be filled in the near future.

In the meantime, pending the filling of the post, the chief medical officer for the Civil Service provides advice on prison medical matters. Medical services in individual cases of course are provided by doctors appointed for that purpose.
