Vol. 393 No. 10

Written Answers. - Milk Quality Improvement Measures Funding.

67.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food whether he will provide EC grants of up to 50 per cent to enable farmers with a milk quota under 25,000 gallons per annum to provide refrigerated units in accordance with the requirements of their local co-operative creameries; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In the years 1978 to 1986, EC grant aid for the purchase of on-farm milk cooling equipment was available to improve the quality of milk delivered within the Community. The grants were funded from the co-responsibility levy on milk and the total amount paid out in Ireland was £7.3 million.

The Commission, who are responsible for allocating the levy proceeds, decided in early 1986 that quality improvement measures should be discontinued after the 1986-87 milk year.
