Vol. 394 No. 1

Written Answers. - Kinsale Harbour Extension.

98.

asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the proposals being formulated for the proposed jetty and harbour extension at Middle Cove in Kinsale Harbour, County Cork; if he has received details of such proposals from the relevant authorities; if his attention has further been drawn to the concerns expressed by the Kinsale Harbour Preservation Association in this regard; if he will ensure that full and comprehensive environmental impact assessment is undertaken in accordance with the EC Directive in relation to this matter before any final decision is made on an extension to the harbour; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that Kinsale Harbour Commissioners are considering proposals to construct a new commercial quay at Middle Cove so that commercial traffic can be moved from the town quay, Customs Quay. These proposals are at a preliminary stage and a decision on whether to proceed will not be made by the commissioners until the results of a wave refraction analysis and a hydrographic survey are available. The commissioners have indicated that they will be making an application for planning permission to Cork County Council if the results of the studies are favourable and they will comply with any requirements made by the council in processing their application.

I have received no representations from the Kinsale Harbour Preservation Society regarding the commissioners' proposals.
