Vol. 394 No. 1

Written Answers. - EC Intervention

asked the Minister for the Marine the reason fish cannot be put into intervention, in the same manner as are agricultural products under EC regulations; and if he will take any steps within the EC to implement such a policy.

The EC Common Market organisation which was agreed from 1 January 1983, contains provision for a market intervention system for fishing. While the system is similar in operation to those in the agriculture sector, the main difference is that due to the perishable nature of the products, there is no storage of the fish, that is disposal takes place immediately after withdrawal from the market. Irish fishermen benefit from the measure to the tune of approximately IR£800,000 per year.
