Vol. 394 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disposal of Injured Farm Animals.

107.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to an EC proposal that all dead or seriously injured farm animals be either buried or processed and reduced to fertiliser or unusable dust, which directive will have a detrimental effect on our casualty livestock industry; and the steps he proposes to take to protect the interests of the State's knackers.

My Department are currently examining the implications of an EC proposal for harmonised rules for the disposal of carcases, slaughter offals and other animal waste. I would hope that the harmonised rules which will eventually be adopted will take due account of the needs of the meat and livestock industry.
