Vol. 394 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tax Amnesty.

88.

asked the Minister for Finance if all cheques submitted under the tax amnesty to date have been honoured; the number and amount of such cheques; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the aggregate value of cheques returned unpaid from amnesty payments was £7,306,000. At the end of January 1989 the value of the cheques remaining unpaid was £3,100,000. Since January 1989 the pursuit of amounts outstanding in these cases has been integrated with the Collector-General's ongoing collection and enforcement activities. While overall pursuit has been vigorous through 1989, separate information on its particular impact on the cases in question is not available.

The value of cheques which were unpaid only marginally affected the outcome of the amnesty as is illustrated by the fact that the total amount of revenue received on foot of the amnesty and related factors was £497 million.
