Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Hospital Incinerators.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

390 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the operation of hospital incinerators; whether incinerators at all Dublin hospitals are operating in an efficient fashion; the temperature at which incineration takes place; the method used; whether any analysis of emissions has been carried out at any of the hospital incinerator sites within the last three years; if so, if he will make such documentation available; the hospitals at which incinerators are sited; the hospitals where incinerators are in operation; the hospitals where incinerators have ceased operation because of inefficiency; and the method used for disposing of clinical and hazardous waste from such hospitals.

I would refer the Deputy to the replies to Questions Nos. 150 of 7 November 1989 and, 45 and 117 of 15 November, 1989 on the subject of hospital incinerators.

The operation of incinerators in Dublin hospitals is a matter for the hospital authorities concerned. I understand that records of the temperature of incineration or of the chemical analysis of flue gases are not routinely kept.
My Department are currently undertaking a survey in relation to the disposal of hospital waste and it is hoped that this survey will provide important information to assist in the formulation of the best policy for solving the problem.
