Vol. 395 No. 1

Written Answers. - Keyboard Teaching Skills.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

50 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Education if she has any plans to develop keyboard teaching skills in national schools and secondary schools in 1990; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

As part of their training, national teachers do a course in the use of computers in national schools. This introduces them to a wide range of computer facilities, applications and skills. There are also in-service courses for serving national teachers on this topic. It is intended that these will be continued in 1990.

Typewriting is at present a subject on the Junior Certificate programme and will be examined at ordinary and higher levels from 1992 onwards.

In addition the new Junior Certificate Business Studies syllabus introduced in September 1989 contains an optional keyboarding element.

The NCCA has recently established a course committee to develop a new syllabus in Typewriting-Keyboarding at Junior Certificate level.
