Vol. 395 No. 3

Written Answers. - Terrorist-related Deaths.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

138 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the number of members of the security forces who have been killed or injured by terrorist or terrorist-related activities over the last 20 years; the number of members of the public who have been killed or injured by such activities within the same time span; and the cost in financial terms to the State.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that 74 civilians, 11 members of the Garda Síochána and one member of the Defence Forces have died as a result of terrorist-related incidents in the last 20 years.

The precise costs of these deaths to the State in financial terms could not be compiled without a detailed examination of the medical and other costs incurred in each case, which would not be warranted.
