Vol. 395 No. 4

Written Answers. - Memorial to Red Hugh O'Donnell.

Dinny McGinley

Ceist:

33 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there is no plaque or other notice indicating the final resting place of Red Hugh O'Donnell in Valladolid; and if the Government will take steps to erect a suitable memorial there.

Red Hugh O'Donnell was buried within the monastery church of Saint Francis at Simancas near Valladolid. The church — and the whole monastery area — was destroyed during a period of upheaval in the 1830s. Today there is a shopping centre on the site. A collateral Spanish descendant of Red Hugh has been for some time endeavouring to identify his actual final resting place. If this can be located, consideration could then be given to the question of a suitable memorial.
