Vol. 395 No. 4

Written Answers. - Conditions in Colombia.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

84 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the action which has been taken by the Irish Government to press the Government of Colombia to restore human rights in that country; and if he will take an initiative on this issue during his Presidency of the EC Council of Ministers.

The Government are deeply concerned at reports of violations of human rights in Colombia. Civil unrest in that country and violations of human rights are largely associated with drug trafficking. The Twelve have condemned the assassinations in Colombia and have expressed their support for the determination of the Colombian authorities to intensify the struggle against the traffic. The Twelve are convinced that the strengthening of its democratic institutions will enable Colombia to overcome the present difficulties and have signalled their willingness to support Colombia in this.
