Vol. 395 No. 5

Written Answers. - Pay Increases.

Séamus Pattison

Ceist:

30 Mr. Pattison asked the Minister for Finance the average rate of pay increase in (a) the public sector and (b) the private sector in 1989.

The precise information sought by the Deputy is not available.

In the absence of uniform timing of the application of theProgramme for National Recovery increases in commercial State companies, it is not possible to calculate the average rate of pay increase in the overall public sector. However, in relation to the narrow public service, it is estimated that, on average, pay rates increased by just over 4 per cent in 1989.
Comprehensive data on the development of pay in the private sector are not available. Information at the disposal of my Department, which includes the various earnings inquiries produced by the CSO, indicates that the overall increase in pay per head in the private sector was of the order of 4 per cent.
