Vol. 395 No. 5

Written Answers. - Civil Service Recruitment.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

40 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Finance if he proposes any changes in the regulations which confine recruitment to new posts in the Civil Service to applicants aged between 17 and 22 years of age; if it is his intention to increase the upper age limit in view of the considerable number of highly qualified unemployed applicants over the age of 22 years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Recruitment to new posts in the Civil Service is not limited to applicants aged between 17 and 22 years of age. The age limits to which the Deputy refers applied in the recent school leaver executive officer competition. Age limits do not always apply in recruitment competitions and, where they do, they vary considerably from competition to competition. The application of an upper age limit (if any) for open competitions is reviewed on an ongoing basis in the context of each individual competition as one of the many factors governing eligibility.
