Vol. 395 No. 5

Written Answers. - Kerry Soccer Clubs' Facilities.

John O'Leary

Ceist:

43 Mr. J. O'Leary asked the Minister for Finance if he will provide facilities for the Killarney Athletic Soccer Club, County Kerry and other soccer clubs in the Killarney National Park at Knockreer in the context of the management plan being prepared for the National Park in Killarney; and if he will make a statement on the matter having regard to the urgent necessity for providing such facilities.

Killarney Athletic Football Club were the only soccer club to apply for a football pitch in the Killarney National Park for the 1989-90 season and they were recently accommodated on a pitch in the Knockreer Estate.

All areas currently available for use as pitches have now been allocated to clubs, both Gaelic and soccer. The Office of Public Works will not provide or manage areas within national parks specifically for team sports on a permanent basis, since this is seen to be the function of the local authority or of the organising body of the relevant sport.
