44 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Finance the progress made to date in the restoration and refurbishment of the National Art Gallery; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
The National Gallery is comprised of three wings which were built in 1864, 1903 and 1968. For the purposes of clarity I will deal with each of these wings separately.
1864 Wing
A major overhaul of the roof of this building was completed last year. Following the roof work, most of the galleries in this wing were redecorated. The main gallery on the ground floor is being redecorated at present and this work will also include the provision of an upgraded lighting system. The work is scheduled for completion at the end of this month.
1903 Wing
A major refurbishment scheme was completed to this central wing last month. This work comprised the provision of a new entrance hall, the redecoration of the galleries, and the provision of lighting and security systems in line with modern standards.
It is expected that both the 1864 and 1903 wings will reopen to the public next month following the rehanging of paintings by the National Gallery staff.
1968 Wing
Tenders are being considered at present for a scheme of major refurbishment to this building and it is hoped that a contract will be placed shortly. The works will take of the order of two years to complete.
