Vol. 395 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Kildare Railway Bridge.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

72 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment the reason for the delay in providing road and bridge realignments at Sallins railway bridge, County Kildare; if work will commence on this project before 1991; the projected cost involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Sallins railway bridge is located on a regional road, and spans the Dublin to Cork railway line.

Following detailed consideration of proposals for the improvement of Sallins railway bridge, agreement was recently reached between the Department, the local authority and Iarnród Éireann on the design for the scheme. The local authority and Iarnród Éireann are now preparing draft contract documents for the scheme. The local authority expect to be in a position to submit the documents to my Department for consideration shortly. Pending the Department's decision on these documents I am not in a position to indicate when work on the construction of the scheme is likely to commence.

The estimated cost of the overall scheme, including the improvement of the immediate approach roads, is of the order of £500,000. I have notified Kildare County Council of a special State road grant of £180,000 as a contribution to costs arising on the scheme in 1990.
