Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Rules for Secondary Schools.

John Bruton

Ceist:

210 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the reason for the provision in rule 34 (i) of section VI of the Rules for Secondary Schools which prevents students from taking certain combinations of subjects at one examination.

Minister For Education (Mrs. O'Rourke)

It has been the policy of the Department of Education over the years not to allow candidates to take combinations of subjects which have significant amounts of the same course material for example "Physics and Chemistry" and either of the separate subjects Physics or Chemistry). In addition where subjects are offered at more than one level it is not acceptable to allow candidates to take more than one level.
