Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tourism Programme.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

220 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the number of projects, both private and public, applied for under the operational programme for tourism 1989 to 1993, by tourist board area; the reason no EC official has yet been appointed to oversee the implementation of this programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have already outlined in some detail the position regarding the implementation of the programme in relation to both public and private projects in my reply of 30 January 1990. As stated, day-to-day administration, including evaluation and selection of applications, is a matter for the administering agencies, i.e. OPW in relation to State expenditure and Bord Fáilte and SFADCo in relation to all other projects. Consequently the information requested is not readily available.

The operation and progress of the Tourism Programme over the next four years will be monitored by a committee chaired by my Department, which will include representatives from the EC Commission. A preliminary meeting took place on 22 January last and the first formal meeting of the committee is scheduled to take place next month. The Commission have already nominated their representation of the committee.
