Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Elimination of Sewage in Harbours.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

16 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Marine if he has any role in relation to the elimination of sewage in harbours; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Sewage in harbours arising from rivers and pipes are a matter for the local authority.

Sewage in harbours from ships discharging their tanks in port is a matter for my Department. I hope to bring legislation before the Dáil this year, that will bring the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, (known as MARPOL,) into force. This Convention has five Annexes dealing with pollution from such sources as oil, harmful substances, noxious liquid substances, garbage and sewage from ships.
