Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fishing Industry Jobs.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Ceist:

17 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for the Marine the number of jobs which have been created in the fishing industry since the launch of the BIM programme for development in 1988; the location of such jobs; whether they are temporary or full-time; and whether they are in the fishing or processing sector.

Since the launch of the BIM plan a total of 1,030 jobs have been created in the fishing industry. Of this amount 510 were created in the aquaculture sector, 350 in the fish processing, 120 in fishing and a further 50 jobs in ancillary activities.

With regard to location, the bulk of the jobs created in the aquaculture industry in Donegal, Galway and Cork. Counties Roscommon, Wexford, Donegal, Mayo, Galway, Kerry and Cork accounted for the jobs created in the processing sector. Jobs created in the fishing sector were mainly in County Donegal with a lesser concentration of jobs in the South West.

Of the total of 450 jobs created in 1988, 285 were part-time and approximately the same number of part-time jobs were created in 1989.

The fishing industry is limited by supply constraints and seasonality. The opportunities now presented by the increasing availability of raw material from the growing aquaculture industry and increased landings of non-quota species such as argentines, horse-mackerel and blue whiting present further scope for development of the industry.
