Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Common Fisheries Policy.

Neil T.C. Blaney

Ceist:

25 Mr. Blaney asked the Minister for the Marine the steps, if any, he has taken to improve our Common Fisheries Policy in the short term; and the initiatives he is taking to bring about renegotiation of that fisheries agreement during the Irish Presidency of the EC.

The framework of the Common Fisheries Policy was established in 1983 and, subject to a review in 1992, will run for 20 years.

All states attempt to influence the ongoing evolution of the Common Fisheries Policy through the adoption and implementation by the Council of new regulations and directives. Similarly, all states aim in the annual process of fixing TACs — Quotas to achieve the best deal they can for their own fishermen while of course not endangering the long-term viability of fish stocks. I can assure you that Ireland's case is pursued with full professionalism and vigour.
With regard to the review envisaged for 1992, I have established a special group comprised of officials of both my Department and the Department of Foreign Affairs to examine this issue in full consultation with the various industry organisations. No effort will be spared to ensure that Ireland's interests are brought fully to the fore in this review.
