Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Boyle River Catchment.

John Connor

Ceist:

68 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the Boyle River catchment, including the Breedogue and Lung river systems, have had their fishing stocks, breeding areas and habitat adversely affected by arterial drainage works in recent years; and the plans, if any, he has in co-operation with the Office of Public Works and the Shannon Fishery Board to restock and rehabilitate the habitats and breeding grounds in this system.

I am aware of the problem with the Breedogue and Lung rivers in the Boyle river catchment.

My Department have completed a predrainage survey and are at present drawing up a programme for rehabilitation works for presentation to the Office of Public Works. The works will be carried out by my Department with the co-operation of the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board. A restocking programme with brown trout will also be carried out. Constant contact regarding the Breedogue/Lung drainage works is maintained between the engineering section of my Department and the drainage engineers of the Office Of Public Works. The rehabilitation works programme will be presented to the Office of Public Works shortly.
