Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Importation of Japanese Scallops.

Toddy O'Sullivan

Ceist:

69 Mr. T. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline his views in relation to the importation of Japanese scallops, in view of objections raised to such importation by environmental groups; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have in this regard received and am having examined a specific proposal. I have asked the promoter involved to give public notice of his proposal and I will allow the normal period for the lodging of any observations or objections by interested parties. I have also asked my Department to hold consultations with representatives of major environmental groups as well as with representatives of the shellfish industry.

In developing the aquaculture industry, there is an important role for research into new species and their suitability for cultivation in Irish conditions. Successful developments in this regard could open substantial new market opportunities and provide new jobs both in primary production and processing.

Great care must be taken, however, to ensure that such developments do not damage native stocks. Any proposed development must be subject to full professional assessment and stringent conditions must be applied.

Any decisions I take on this specific proposal will be based on the results of the examinations and consultation process which is now in train and a positive decision from me to allow the project to proceed will be taken only if it is supported by the best professional and scientific advice.
