Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Ordnance Survey Staff.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

83 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance in relation to the Ordnance Survey Office the areas from which a number of staff will be recalled; the number who will remain on field duties; and if the move to Dublin will be of a permanent nature.

Staff assigned to the production of the new series of maps in the 1:50,000 scale will be recalled from all areas of field work. About 80 staff will remain on field work. It is envisaged that the assignment of staff to headquarters for this project will be long term.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

84 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance the effects of the Civil Service recruitment embargo and early retirement schemes on the Ordnance Survey; and if he will give the number of persons employed in the various sections at (a) 31 December 1979 and (b) 31 December 1989.

Like all other Government Departments and Offices, the Ordnance Survey has had to absorb its share of reductions in staff numbers arising from embargoes on the filling of vacancies, and the early retirement scheme for which 19 people in the Ordnance Survey opted. It is not clear to which embargo the Deputy is referring, but since March 1987, numbers have declined from 352, to 295 at 31 December 1989. Due to a major restructuring in 1984, it is not possible to compare the numbers serving in individual sections on the dates mentioned by the Deputy. However, the total number serving on 31 December 1979 was 328.
