Vol. 396 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Employment Schemes.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

104 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Labour if it is compulsory for persons to take up participation in social employment schemes when notified to do so; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is not compulsory for persons to take up participation in the social employment scheme when offered a place. All persons on the live register are considered available for employment and are accordingly considered for the social employment scheme as opportunities arise. However, persons who refuse an SES opportunity, without a reason acceptable to FÁS, are reported to the Department of Social Welfare. It is a matter for that Department to decide if they may continue to draw unemployment benefit or assistance.
