Vol. 396 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Roscommon Hospital.

John Connor

Ceist:

129 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Health, in light of his commitments given on 7 February 1990 to upgrade St. Patrick's Psychiatric Hospital, Castlerea, County Roscommon, if he will make a statement on the extent of the proposed upgrading; and the services which will be retained at the hospital.

As I said in my reply to the Deputy last week, I am concerned to achieve improvements in the health services of County Roscommon, including the psychiatric services.

Of great importance to the development of psychiatric services in Roscommon will be the opening of the 30 bed psychiatric unit at Roscommon Hospital in the near future. This unit will provide acute psychiatric services for the people of County Roscommon. Certain other psychiatric services will continue to be provided in St. Patrick's Hospital, Castlerea. As part of the Western Health Board's development plan, a range of back-up facilities, such as supported hostels, day centres, workshops and community residences, are being put in place in various locations throughout County Roscommon. Included in the board's proposals are the provision of a sector headquarters, day centre and workshop in Castlerea. As a result of these developments, there will be a great improvement in the services for psychiatric patients.
