226 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education the reason the 1988 Leaving Certificates were not delivered until February 1990; if she has made arrangements to eliminate this unacceptable delay; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
The leaving certificates for 1988 were issued to the schools on 20 October 1989.
Priority was given in the work of the examinations branch to preparations for the 1989 examinations and as a result a backlog in the issuing of certificates built up. This backlog relating to certificates will be eliminated with the further development in the computerisation of the examination system.
