Vol. 396 No. 4

Written Answers. - River Lee Crossing.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

110 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he will comment on the statement he made on 8 June 1989 when he gave a commitment that a decision on the downriver crossing of the River Lee, Cork, would be reached within eight weeks; and when the eight weeks were to commence.

I have already announced that I am satisfied as to the need for the crossing and the location of the crossing. I will give a decision in relation to the mode of the crossing as soon as possible.

Without prejudice to my decision on the mode of the crossing, the timing of the construction of the project has been considered in the context of the preparation of the draft operational programme for roads and other transport infrastructure. A draft of this programme, prepared in accordance with the Community support framework for Ireland, has been submitted to the EC Commission. Pending the adoption of this programme I do not propose to give details of the timing of major schemes in the programme.
