Vol. 396 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Kerry Road.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

36 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the unfinished condition of the Listowel-Dirha East Road, County Kerry, known locally as death row; to the fact that this road is a traffic hazard and a danger to the public due to its unfinished condition; and if he will make a special grant available to Kerry County Council to enable it to complete the work which commenced in 1989.

Responsibility for the funding of road works at this location rests with Kerry County Council. The council may, at its own discretion, deploy funding from within the discretionary grants for regional and county roads allocated by my Department to meet the cost of works on the road in question.

The discretionary grants notified to the local authority for 1990 amount to £3,023,000. This represents an increase of £600,000, or 25 per cent, compared with the road grant provisions under the equivalent headings in 1989. I do not propose to make special road grant assistance available to the local authority in this case.
