Vol. 396 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Waterford Roadway Construction.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

59 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make available a special allocation to Waterford Corporation and County Council for the construction of an adequate roadway from the Regional Airport to the city.

As the road in question is a non-national road, responsibility for undertaking any improvement works primarily rests with the local authorities, the funding normally being met from local resources supplemented by the discretionary grants provided by my Department for such roads. Discretionary grants totalling £1.878 million have been notified to the authorities for 1990.

Proposals for the improvement and realignment of the road, at an estimated cost of some £4 million at 1989 prices, have been received in the Department. The local authorities have been advised that, while there is no objection on engineering grounds to the proposals as submitted, no commitment can be given to making special road grant assistance available because of the demand for capital for other priority schemes.
