Vol. 396 No. 9

Written Answers. - UCC Campus Bottle Bank.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

197 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the Students' Union in University College Cork have been attempting to persuade the governing body of the university to arrange for the provision of a bottle bank in the environs of the campus of the university in order to promote environmentally sound practices such as recycling; if she will convey her support to the appropriate authorities; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of attempts by the Students' Union in UCC to persuade the Governing Body of the university to arrange for the provision of a bottle bank in the environs of the campus. In any event, as the Deputy knows, the universities are autonomous institutions and as such are responsible for making decisions in relation to the day-to-day running of the institutions. Accordingly, the matter to which the Deputy refers is one solely for resolution by the authorities in UCC.
