Vol. 396 No. 9

Written Answers. - Student Accommodation.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

198 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that students in third level education living away from home and in private rented accommodation are suffering excessive hardship because of their being denied a rent book for their rented accommodation from private landlords; if she proposes to take any action to rectify this situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Ceist:

199 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the Union of Students in Ireland conducted a nationwide housing survey on student accommodation which revealed disturbing details regarding the housing conditions of students; the action, if any, she proposes to take, in consultation with the Minister for the Environment, to ensure that there is an adequate supply of appropriate accommodation for students; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 198 and 199 together.

I would refer the Deputy to replies given by the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 14, 70, 175, 177 on 14 November 1989.

I would also point out that under the Finance Acts there are incentives to assist the provision of private rented accommodation. Significant progress has been made in recent years in a number of the university colleges in providing student accommodation.

Moreover, officers are available in all university colleges to assist and facilitate students in securing suitable accommodation.
