Vol. 396 No. 9

Written Answers. - AIDs Classification.

Tomás MacGiolla

Ceist:

50 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the United States Government has classified AIDS as a dangerous and contagious disease and requires Irish citizens who are AIDS sufferers and who wish to visit the United States to declare that they are infected and apply for a waiver, which is granted only in special circumstances; if, in view of the fact that the World Health Assembly urged member states to protect the rights and dignity of persons who are HIV positive and who have AIDS, he will urge the United States authorities to remove HIV/AIDS from its list of classified diseases; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the rules introduced by the US authorities regarding US visa applicants who are HIV positive or AIDS sufferers. I am currently considering, in conjunction with our Community partners, the making of a joint EC demarche to the US authorities in Washington in the matter.
