Vol. 396 No. 9

Written Answers. - Endangered Species Convention.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

51 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the reason the Government have not ratified the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland supports the objectives of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora. The provisions of the convention are fully implemented in Ireland under EC regulations.

The reason Ireland has not ratified the convention is that we have a very small volume of trade in the species covered by the convention and this would not justify the commitment of resources necessary to service the convention. Moreover, the objectives of the convention are already realised in Ireland through our implementation of the relevant EC regulations.
