Vol. 396 No. 9

Written Answers. - Timber Industry.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

105 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of persons employed in the timber industry in (a) 1970, (b) 1980 and (c) 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the CSO that, according to the census of population, the estimated numbers of persons employed in the wood and wood products industries at the censuses taken in April 1971, 1981 and 1986 were as follows:

1971

1981

1986

Sawmills and joinery works

3,230

6,049

5,892

Furniture

5,761

5,772

Other wood products

9,461

3,214

3,289

Total

12,646

15,024

14,953

A more recent estimate is available from the labour force sample survey, LFS, which estimates that employment in the wood and wood products industries amounted to 15,400 in April 1988. The estimate from the 1989 LFS will be available in a few months.
Indications from the quarterly industrial employment inquiry suggest that there has been little change in employment in the industry between 1988 and 1989.
