128 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice the reason the post of director of medical services for the prison service has not been advertised as being permanent; and whether he accepts that the lack of security of tenure is likely to discourage qualified people and particularly those who at present hold permanent consultant posts.
Following consultation with various health and medical interests and a review of the terms and conditions offered when the post of director of medical services for the prison service was previously advertised, it was considered that the post should be offered on this occasion on a contract basis to allow for greater flexibility in relation to the conditions of employment and salary terms to be offered. It should be noted that the contract is for an initial two year period but is renewable.
