Vol. 397 No. 2

Written Answers. - Mariculture Development.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

49 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Marine if he has received applications for mariculture development in (i) Bantry Bay, (ii) Dunmanus Bay and (iii) Roaring Water Bay, County Cork; and the number of applications (a) received, (b) granted and (c) under consideration, in each area.

The number of applications for mariculture development which have been received and which are under consideration for each of the areas referred to by the Deputy is as follows — Bantry Bay: 29 applications, Dunmanus Bay: 27 applications, and Roaring Water Bay: 71 applications.

While no formal licences have yet been issued in any of the three areas some operations have proceeded on an informal basis. These will be regularised as soon as possible.
In the case of Bantry Bay the area has been designated and consideration of allocation of licences is well advanced. In the cases of Dunmanus Bay and Roaring Water Bay, BIM are, on my directions, carrying out technical surveys and evaluations aimed at establishing a proper framework for evaluation and regulation of development there.
