Vol. 397 No. 2

Written Answers. - Howth Sites.

Patrick McCartan

Ceist:

46 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for the Marine the number of licences or leases which have been issued to persons, companies or interests of sites on the West Pier and nearby sites in Howth, Dublin 13; the number of sites which remain to be disposed of; and the nature of the business of the applicants who have been granted, or are waiting the grant of a lease or licence.

My Department assumed legal responsibility for Howth Harbour on 1 January 1990. Since that date one engrossed lease has issued to a tenant on the West Pier for signature and sealing; one draft lease has issued to another tenant for his approval, and the Chief State Solicitor has been asked to expedite the issue of five other draft leases.

The general policy is to lease sites to firms engaged in the fish and fishery related industries.

An area of about 1.5 acres at the West Pier will be subdivided into industrial sites and allocated to firms engaged in the fishing industry. A total of 31 applicants expressed an interest in these sites.
