Vol. 397 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Kildare Flooding Damage.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

65 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if he has investigated reports of flooding in the Athy area of County Kildare which seems to have resulted from poor drainage of the River Barrow; if he intends to take any action to alleviate this problem; if he will draw up a drainage programme for the river; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Athy area is situated in the Barrow drainage district, responsibility for the maintenance of which rests with the Barrow Drainage Board. Drainage works in the area could be undertaken by the Commissioners of Public Works only in the context of a comprehensive scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, for the Barrow catchment. At this stage there are no plans for such a scheme.
