Vol. 397 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Kildare Estate.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

98 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if any offer has been made by the local bodies in respect of the acquisition and restoration of buildings and sites of historical interest at Lyons Estate, Celbridge, County Kildare; if she will give details of the content of such submissions; the way in which it is proposed to accommodate these proposals in the event of the sale of the estate; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

99 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education, having regard to her replies to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 20 and 234 of 6 March 1990, if the committee appointed by the governing body of University College, Dublin decided unanimously to dispose of all or part of the Lyons Estate at Celbridge, County Kildare; if the decision to sell was taken by that committee or if any other committee was involved in the decision; if any of the property being sold was the subject of expenditure incurred between 1982 and 1987, with particular reference to stable yards and indoor training facilities for horses; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 98 and 99 together.

The Lyons Estate is the property of University College, Dublin; the decision to sell a portion of the estate was taken by the governing body of the college, in accordance with the powers conferred on it by the charter of the college. Arrangements for the proposed sale, including the consideration of offers for the acquisition of the property or any part of it, are matters for the college authorities to decide.

It has been ascertained from the college authorities that a small element of the expenditure on facilities at the Lyons Estate between 1982 and 1987 was incurred on maintenance and minor works associated with the stable yards which are now to be sold. I understand that the indoor training facilities for horses are to be dismantled and relocated on the part of the estate to be retained by the college.
