Vol. 397 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drug Availability.

Austin Currie

Ceist:

71 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Health whether the drug myodil which was used to help diagnose back complaints was ever available in this country; if so, whether there have been complaints that its use caused the gradual deteriorating disease arachnoiditis; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Myodil, an ionic oily radio-opaque contrast medium, was available for use in this country some years ago. It was the only such agent available for X-ray diagnosis of spinal cord damage — that is, for myelography — prior to 1982.

No reports of adverse reactions related to the use of this agent in this country were received by the National Drugs Advisory Board.

Myodil is no longer marketed in Ireland, as non-ionic contrast media have now replaced it.
