In the period 1984 to 1989, State grants under the local improvement scheme were confined to non-public farm road projects eligible for EC aid under the western package. The programme for local improvement scheme farm road projects under the existing package was completed in 1989.
In 1990 the local improvement scheme grants may be used for projects in rural areas involving the improvement of non-public roads, including farm roads and bog roads, and minor land drainage works, i.e. restoration of the local improvement scheme as it operated up to the end of 1983.
