Written Answers. - Callan (Kilkenny) By-Pass.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

153 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the urgent need for a new by-pass at Callan, County Kilkenny; when finance will be made available for the completion of this work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

154 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will meet a deputation from Kilkenny County Council and members of the Callan community, County Kilkenny, to discuss the urgent need for the provision of a by-pass at Callan; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose taking Questions Nos. 153 and 154 together.

Preliminary design proposals for a by-pass at Callan were received from the local authority on the 25 April 1990, and these proposals are at present being examined. The estimated cost of the proposed scheme is £3.2 million.

The planning of major road improvement schemes in the period 1990 to 1993 has been considered in the context of the preparation of an operational programme for roads and other transport infrastructure. A draft of the programme, which has been prepared in accordance with the Community Support Framework for Ireland, has been submitted to the EC Commission. Pending finalisation of the programme, it is not proposed to indicate the major schemes on which works will be undertaken in the period up to 1993.
I am at present considering a request that I meet a deputation comprising members of the Callan community and public representatives, to discuss the proposed by-pass. I will give my decision on this request shortly.
